About This Spot

Stepping into Al’s French Frys in South Burlington feels like falling into a well-loved corner of Americana, where the hum of easy conversation meets the friendly clatter of a classic diner. The atmosphere moves at a comfortable pace, relaxed but lively enough to remind you that this is a neighborhood gathering spot — a place where families, friends, and solo visitors alike come for good, honest food and a sense of familiar warmth.

The décor gently nods to mid-century charm, evoking an era when meals were simple, hearty, and shared across booths with formica tables and vinyl seats. There’s a certain joy in watching orders arrive, heaping plates of crispy fries steaming alongside burgers that might be modest in size but generous in spirit. It’s a space that encourages lingering, savoring the small pleasures like their distinctively crisp fries, a creamy black raspberry twist creemee, or the unexpected delight of an apple cider sundae during a cool Vermont afternoon.

More than just a place to grab a quick bite, Al’s French Frys carries an undercurrent of nostalgia — whether it’s recalling childhood visits or discovering a local tradition for the first time. The menu offers familiar crossroads of comfort that pair well with the upbeat yet laid-back vibe: from the sizzling Philly cheesesteaks to fried clams that feel like a seaside treat amidst the Green Mountains, each item complements the mood of easy togetherness.

It’s clear why patrons often return: the portions reflect a generosity that feels rooted in community rather than flash, the pace is unhurried but attentive, and the staff offer a friendly presence that makes the space feel welcoming rather than transactional. Whether you’re winding down after a nearby show or simply craving a little bite that tastes like home, Al’s delivers an experience that goes beyond fast food — a moment of simple, shared comfort amid the hum of South Burlington life.

Friendly, quick, affordable, and tasty! Stopped here after a show at Higher Ground. Very spacious and clean dining area.

The french fries are crispy and very good. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed. Big portion of chicken strips, etc.. There were no complaints. Small soft ice-cream was big.

Burgers, fries, and corndogs were good. The patties on the burgers were disappointingly small. Good size for kids, but not foodies like me. Friendly staff!

This place is a childhood favorite of my dad's. The fries were so so so amazing. and the portion sizes were absolutely massive, they do not cheat you at all. the burgers were pretty good, a little small but delicious. the pricing was good for the amount of food we got. the vibe was fantastic, it was very old-timey diner. and the service was wonderful

Stopped by for lunch, the aesthetic is phenomenal. It looks like a 60’s fast food joint was plucked out of the past and placed right here. Food was decent, I liked the burger and the fries were nice and crispy.

Al’s French Frys Consistent Comfort Food with Nostalgic Charm Al’s French Frys is one of those rare places where you always know exactly what you’re going to get in the best way possible. The food is consistently delicious, satisfying, and made just the way you remember it from the last visit. My past orders have included: a quart of their famous Frys (the large), a large order of onion rings, double cheeseburgers with lettuce and tomato (I add onions, extra pickles, ketchup, and mustard at the end), a double cheeseburger with extra pickles, mustard, and ketchup added at the end, the crispy chicken sandwich with bacon on the side (plus extra pickles and mayo on the side), a root beer with no ice, and a large chocolate shake. The Frys are always fried to perfection crisp on the outside with a soft, fluffy inside. The onion rings are beautifully fried, light and crisp with a sweet bite, and never that disappointing bite where the onion slides out of the batter. The burgers are thin, juicy, and full of flavor, with only the occasional bit of gristle. The crispy chicken sandwich is crispy without being oily, with tender meat. Occasionally you might get a bite with a ligament, but it’s rare. I’ve had the mozzarella sticks in the past but they’re not my personal favorite, but certainly decent. I have also had the mac and cheese and feel it is lacking flavor, it is probably my least favorite item on their menu that I have had. I’m looking forward to trying their chicken wings soon; I caught the smell (and the envy) after seeing someone enjoying them during a recent ice cream stop. One suggestion: I wish the online menu had more detail. It would be helpful to know exactly what comes on each burger or sandwich (cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, etc.), and what’s available to add at the end (ketchup, mustard, pickles, onions, relish, etc.). Also if it is a crispy or grilled chicken sandwich. It would make customizing orders and ordering for friends and family easier. This is comfort food, and when that’s what I’m craving, Al’s delivers every time. Their creemees are also a highlight: I love a small: half chocolate, half maple creemee with a chocolate dip, served in a dish. It’s the perfect sweet treat. The atmosphere is warm and nostalgic. The outdoor play area is a great touch, especially for families, and makes it easy to spend a few hours just enjoying the space. While the building could use a few updates especially the restrooms and some playground updates as well it doesn’t take away from the charm or experience. Al’s French Frys is a long time favorite of mine when I want good, consistent, comforting food in a relaxed, nostalgic, and fun setting.

Fantastic fries, amazing shakes, cool hats as well. Inviting place to hang out (until 11 PM!). Planning to purposely stop here anytime we are passing through Burlington headed to anywhere to/from Montreal from now on. Wish we knew about this iconic place before! THANKS AL!

Old-school burger place that's right up my alley. Ordering was easy. You just have to wait in line and then try to find an open table. Burgers were tasty, and the fries were really good. They play oldies music in the background, which adds to the nostalgia. Don't miss this place if you're in the area.
